Early Childhood Classes

Mixed-age preschool classes are provided for children ages 3-6 years. Children may begin at 2 1/2 if potty-trained. Children must be the apporpriate age by Sept. 1 of the current year. Our preschool classes follow the High/Scope educational approach. Active learning is the principle element of the High/Scope approach. Active learning occurs when all five of the following ingredients are present:

• Materials: A variety of interesting materials are readily accessible to the children.
• Manipulation: Children are free to move, handle, explore, and work with the materials.
• Choice: Children have opportunities to set their goals and select materials, activities, and play partners.
• Language from the children: Children communicate, verbally and nonverbally, what they are doing and what they have done.
• Support from adults: Adults encourage the children's efforts and help them extend or build upon their work by helping them learn to solve problems that arise.
